| The Edmonton Academy of Medicine was founded in 1902 by ten pioneer
doctors from Edmonton and Strathcona to "discuss medical subjects, provide social
intercourse, and protect the business and professional interests of its
members".
The objectives of the society were redefined in its 1975 Constitution as being
"...to promote the art and science of medicine, to facilitate the fraternal
aspects of our profession and to act as the district medical society for the Alberta
Medical Association."
As part of its activities, the Academy organized monthly seminars, an annual Banquet,
Golf Tournament and Curling League. The Academy also presented three annual awards: the
Outstanding Physician Award, the Clinical Research Award and the E.L. Pope Memorial Award
to the student with the highest standing in internal medicine.
Following regionalization and the formation of the Capital Region Medical Staff
Association to provide a single voice for physicians in the region, discussions began
between the executive of the Academy of Medicine and the CRMSA on merger. This process was
completed this year, and the Edmonton Academy was disbanded.
The Annual Golf Tournament and the Edmonton Doctors' Curling League continue their
activities. The tradition of the Annual Banquet will continue as the Capital Region
Medical Staff Association Annual Banquet. The Outstanding Physician Award, Clinical
Research Award and E.L. Pope Award continue to be presented annually.
